WWI: From Adelphi to Alsace

In accord with the Changing Nature of War and Peace initiative and in recognition of the centennial year of World War One, the Adelphi University Archives and Special Collections presents “WWI: From Adelphi to Alsace.”

Located on the first floor of Swirbul Library, the exhibition highlights World War One-related items drawn from across University Archives and Special Collections, including:

  • an illuminated edition of John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields;”
  • a sample of the work of influential Dutch cartoonist Louis Raemaekers;
  • a holograph letter from Sir Wilmot Herringham, the first doctor to serve during the war as consulting physician to British forces overseas;
  • photographs of Henry Drysdale Dakin whose landmark manual detailing the successful use of innovative antiseptics by military surgeons to treat serious wounds during the war greatly influenced the treatment of infections.
