Who Makes Your Greek Yogurt? Dairy Jobs and Broken Backs

racial-justice-matters-logoGuest speakers:
Carly Fox, The Worker Justice Center of New York,
Victor Hernandez, New York Dairy Farmworker (via Skype as he is physically unable to travel)

New York is the top yogurt producing state in the country and the major Greek yogurt brands—Chobani, Fage and Dannon—are thriving. Yet the workers who take care of and milk the cows for the yogurt work some of the most dangerous jobs in the state, with 99 fatalities in New York agriculture since 2010.

Victor Hernandez will tell his own story so that students have a first hand perspective of the modern immigrant tale. Fox and Hernandez will explore the conditions of New York dairy workers and how these conditions stem from power dynamics related to race, ethnicity, and legal status, and the law. Fox and Hernandez will further examine the campaign to change worker conditions and the role of students (including those at Adelphi) in the campaign.

This event is part of the AU Reads initiative and the 2015-2016 Adelphi Collaboration Project initiative of Racial Justice Matters. Co-sponsored by the Collaboration Project, the Departments of Political Science and Sociology, the Criminal Justice program, the General Studies Learning Community, Levermore Global Scholars, the Criminal Justice Club, and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s office.
